How To Attach Pictures To Old Window Pane

***Wrote this post while in Montana!***

Moving into an old farmhouse does have its perks.  Old farmhouses sometimes come with quondam farm treasures.  While moving in I discovered all sorts of cool and nifty relics and boy did the wheels in my mind get to turning!  I of the bully piffling discoveries was a stack of dusty, weathered, wooden window panes.  They were covered in barn funk and spider web, but the potential for a nifty craft was enough to make my skin tingle!

Dirty and Dingy but I can see the potential!

Some of the old windows were missing panes of glass, and some had cracks, only that didn't limit my imagination.  In this post, I will go step by step on how I made 1 sad, forgotten, window into a vintage, picture show frame.

Yuck!

_____________

List of Supplies:

1 Sometime Window

A metal scraper

A light base paint (you may not demand this*)

A top glaze of your desired colour ( I used Behr intereior, semi gloss enamel.  *sorry friends, i dont know the verbal color I used)

A small bottle of brown Acrylic Paint

Paint Brushes, wash sponge, rags, soapy water

Window Cleaner

Fine grain sand paper.

Supplies you will need.

______________

At present that y'all have all your  supplies, I will requite you the step by stride on how to make trash in to awesomness!

Footstep 1.  If you have a stack of windows like I did, option the ane that has the least amount of damage to the panes of drinking glass.  If you accept some that were cracked, like I did, don't worry.  Its only gonna add to the rustic advent.

Check out my stash!

Pace 2.Discover a flat sturdy work surface and protect anything you dont want painted with a sheet of plastic or a garbage purse.  A lot of the time we forget this step, because we are and then eager to jump into creative elation, but don't go ruining the dining room tabular array with a glob of paint.

Step iii.  Okay fourth dimension to coil up those sleeves and get to cleaning.  The kickoff thing I did, and I recommend, is to vaccum all the quondam barn funk off the window.  I used the castor attachment to my vaccum to do this.  If y'all dont have one you can e'er use an former paint brush to castor off all the grit and debre off. Just make certain y'all get as off every bit much dirt,  grass, loose paint, spider webs every bit possible.

This was super handy when I came to vaccuming out all the nooks and crannys.

Step 4. Side by side take your metal scraper and run it along the forest frame of the window.  This will take off chipping paint pieces, globs of dirt, or any hard caulking that might be caked on.  IMPORTANT:  Do not become so vigorous with this stride.  If you get carried away y'all may break some of the delicate glass or break off some caulking that keeps the glass in its little foursquare confinement.  It is non necessary to take off all the old paint.  Remember, we are going for a distressed forest look.  Subsequently this is completed, echo Step  3.

Scrape the loose pigment, clumped dirt, and sometime caulk

Stride 5.  With warm soapy water and a adept sponge, launder all the dust and build up off the window.  After, dry with a good cotton rag.

Stride 6.  Time to paint!  If your window has alot of onetime paint  that yous like on information technology, like mine did, you can probably skip with the base coat.  Mine was a white color and was exactly what I was looking for. If not, paint the base coat on and let dry.

Make clean and set up for my summit coat color.

Step 7.  One time base glaze is dry, repeat with top coat color.  I waited until my paint was   about completely dry, with very piffling tackiness and then moved on to step 8. 45min to an hour.  If you lot allow the paint to dry, its okay too.  But make sure you have some depression grain sand paper on hand.

Dont cha just love this aqua color! All done with the top coat

Pace eight. If you just permit the paint become "virtually dry" yous can skip this step but it is worth the read, just in instance.  If you immune your paint to dry, yous now demand to sand the window so that the base glaze and $.25 of forest show through.  This volition give information technology that chipped paint await.  There is no wrong way to practise this step .  Merely sand till yous achieve your desired amount of aging on the wood.

Step nine. Antiquing the wood.  This is what gives it that weathered appearance.  For this project I picked a brown acrylic craft paint (pigment colour was Maple Syrup), but depending on the look you want to attain, you tin can use grey or black.  Just almost whatsoever color will do merely since I want information technology to wait like anile and vintage, I went with brown.   Have your brownish paint and dilute it with water a in a small-scale basin .  About ane table spoon of paint to 2 tabular array spoons of water.  Yous desire it to look similar a muddy water.  Castor this mixture on  sections of the forest frame and and with the rags wipe information technology off.  Continue painting sections, dont pigment the whole frame then wipe.  You may get the paint heavy on ane side and light on the other.  Remember , if yous want a heavier age, you can always repeat this.   Since my paint was tacky, wiping took off some of the top coat, allowing the onetime base paint to prove through.

Paint pocket-sized sections and wipe for a more uniformed apperance.

Step 10.  Permit the window to dry out and enjoy.  Think of the possibilities!  This window has six window panes so I opted for six pictures.  You can identify old newspaper, deco art, pressed flowers….the posibilities are endless.  I took my pictures, and used the modgepog and an art castor to adhere them to the glass.  TADA!

Paint is dry and prepare to decorate! 😀

Then in that location you are, all the info you need to accomplish this awesome project on your ain.  Let me know how it goes!

Until Side by side Fourth dimension,

Apr ❤
