How To Clean Blackend Electrical Terminals Safely

Dan has been a licensed journey-level electrician for 17 years. He has all-encompassing experience in most areas of the electric trade.

This battery terminal has corroded to the point that it is no longer reliable and is in bad need of cleaning.

This battery terminal has corroded to the indicate that it is no longer reliable and is in bad need of cleaning.

Somewhen, many electrical connections will demand cleaning, peculiarly if they are non used frequently. The charger connectedness in your phone volition probably remain make clean for a long time only because it is used every day, only others are so seldom disconnected that dirt and corrosion can build until good contact is no longer possible.

Chief among these are the connections on automobiles, both battery and other electrical connectors such every bit a plug for trailer lights. Exposure to the elements coupled with a lack of use nearly guarantees that bug volition arise.

Electric connectors in the home are usually easily cleaned with a elementary spray of contact cleaner, available at whatsoever electronics store such as Radio Shack, just truly dirty or corroded connections on your car are another thing. This article will describe how to clean those connections that are beyond being helped by electronic contact cleaner, particularly those on a car.

Annotation: It should exist mentioned that information technology is non a adept thought to endeavour to clean the connections on a household outlet; simply supplant the outlet rather than trying to clean it. Home low-cal switches are the same; simply replace the low-cal switch rather than try to clean it. The reason in both cases is the same—poor electrical connections in the wiring of your dwelling house tin cause electrical fires, and however low that risk, saving a couple of dollars isn't worth it.

How to Make clean Bombardment Terminals

Chief amongst the culprits likely to need cleaning are the battery terminals on the car. Side terminals (the battery cable is bolted to the side of the battery rather than a post on the height) used on many cars today have helped somewhat, only both side and top terminals can and practise corrode badly. This is not commonly the result of ordinary dirt or grease, but corrosion from the result of acidic vapors from the battery. It'due south going to accept a picayune more than rinsing them off to clean these special connectors.

A note of caution here: That white stuff in the photo below is the upshot of acid vapors from the bombardment. It is not violently acidic like pure battery acid, only it is acidic, and sensitive pare or clothing tin can be burned by prolonged contact. Rubber gloves are a wise precaution, and you should immediately and thoroughly rinse any habiliment that comes in contact with it. The natural reaction to getting some on your hands volition be to wipe your hands on your pants, forget about it, and wash those pants a day later, whereupon you lot will have holey pants.

Don't wipe your hands on your clothing.

Step ane: Remove the Connector From the Battery

Using advisable wrenches (never unproblematic pliers), remove the battery terminal from the battery, taking intendance not to go the white pulverization on you, your article of clothing, or your car. Using a paper towel or (preferably) a dispensable rag, wipe well-nigh of the corrosion off the last. Dispose of the towel or rag immediately. Leaving it sitting effectually while you piece of work is a good way to get acrid on your clothes or car terminate.

Likewise, be very conscientious where tools used are gear up down, and brand sure to thoroughly launder them in lather and water when you are finished with them.

The terminal has been removed from the post and the worst of the corrosion wiped off with a rag.

Step ii: Clean the Battery Connection

Fill a small bowl most half full of warm water and add baking soda to the indicate that it is completely saturated and will no longer dissolve whatever more of the baking soda. There should be a teaspoon or more of the blistering soda left undissolved in the bowl.

Put the battery terminal, wire and all, into the bowl and gently swirl it. As the dissolved baking soda is used upwards in the chemical reaction, more will deliquesce to replace it. If necessary, supercede the h2o and soda with more as information technology becomes too dirty or if there was insufficient soda to clean the terminal. Wipe the terminal dry and use a wire castor to shine information technology upwardly, removing the very last of the corrosion. Special battery-concluding wire brushes are available for top-post batteries; side-post connections tin can be cleaned by an ordinary wire brush.

Note: Preventive measures are available to cease future corrosion and are recommended when cleaning or replacing whatever battery terminal. A spray is available that is quite effective, as are small chemical-impregnated felt pads that fit over the postal service or under side terminals. Either one will go a long mode to preventing future issues.

Step 3: Reinstall the Battery Terminal

Reinstall the last on the bombardment. Most cars volition lose radio settings and such when the bombardment is disconnected, and some volition require a few brusk trips before running at peak efficiency as the computer re-learns what it lost when all ability was asunder. Do not be alarmed at such short-term symptoms.

Cleaning Other Connectors

Other connectors on the machine might include spade or ring terminals and plug and socket connections. A common trouble is the band concluding where the battery wire connects to the starter, and trailer light plugs sometimes go muddied as well.

Cleaning Apartment Connectors

Spade and band terminals seldom encounter the corrosion of a battery terminal and are easier (and safer) to make clean. If they are greasy (as opposed to simple dirt), the grease needs to exist removed; rubbing alcohol volition often aid here, just then will lather and h2o. If h2o is used, however, make sure it is completely dry out before re-installing the connector. In all cases, the connector must be removed from the connection to clean it.

Later on cleaning off unproblematic dirt and/or grease, a pocket-sized piece of sandpaper, 100 or 150 grit, is invaluable. Sand the connector until information technology is shiny. In many cases a ring terminal volition fit over a bolt and be held in place by a nut; the nut tin can be sanded but the commodities information technology fits over is better cleaned with a wire brush.

Cleaning Plug and Socket Electric Connectors

These connections include the trailer plug and are usually simply dirty; information technology may be months during the winter before the camp trailer is hooked up again and during that time the socket on the auto is collecting grit and route grime.

While the plug is easily washed and may benefit from a pocket-sized piece of sandpaper, the socket it fits into is some other story. A very small brush is very handy but a brush that small is not like shooting fish in a barrel to observe. A second selection is to wash it with a high-pressure stream of water, just make sure it is completely dry before plugging it in. If this is a consistent problem, brushes are a superior choice.

This plug and socket connector for trailer lights is a good candidate for the set of small wire brushes.

Questions & Answers

Question: How do I clean a pocket-size heater plug with slight corrosion?

Respond: Sandpaper or a wire castor usually works well. Steel wool can be useful every bit well, but care must be taken to make sure there aren't tiny strings of wool left after cleaning that could create a short between the plugs.

I have seen several references to using silicone(dielectric) grease to lubricate connectors and improve connections. At present this seems counter-intuitive, grease is the last thing you would desire on an electric connector. Co-ordinate to Wikipedia(which isn't e'er correct!), silicone grease shouldn't exist used on connectors and special electronic connector lubricants used instead. In whatever instance I had a problem with the earphones on my jail cell phone and the jack plug wasn't making proper contact. I tried cleaning the plug with IPA(Isopropyl Alcohol) on several occasions but this simply solved the problem temporarily (presumably until the connector re-tarnished). Somewhen I smeared a pocket-size amount of silicone grease on the plug and this sorted the problem and it never recurred.

@goodlady - lol, yes, I've had a few holes eaten into my clothes. Information technology'southward just too darn like shooting fish in a barrel to do - we but don't think twice virtually it. Pants would survive if we got a fiddling on them and apace washed them, but instead they get thrown into the dirty clothes hamper to sit and be eaten away.

@raggededge - Poor speaker connections generally result in either no noise or static that comes and goes. If that'due south the case, you might remove and insert the connector several times to see if information technology cleans up at all.

Bev G from Wales, UK on May 17, 2022:

The speakers on my kid'due south computers are making horrible noises - and information technology's not their games! D'you remember the connector into the sub-woofer is at fault.

I beloved your great communication - I know where to come if I demand to know anything nearly electrics.

Penelope Hart from Rome, Italy on May 16, 2022:

Very useful. Very helpful information. Glad you mentioned not wiping hands on pants. How many times have we lost good pants?! Voting upward.
